:: Awareness on Disaster Management

Disaster Management uses a variety of different tools, programs, and methodologies to lessen the impact of a disaster and to provide the managers with means of guiding relief and reconstruction activities. This Lesson is a three-part exploration of these tools and methods as they pertain to
  1. Prevention and mitigation
  2. Preparedness, and
  3. Post-disaster management

Public awareness campaigns disseminate information about the type of hazard, effects of hazard, measures available to reduce the impact and actions to take for stress management when the hazard strikes.

:: Planning Strategies

Vishwa Parivar Foundation organised two hour long informative and interactive programme on “Fire Safety and Disaster Mitigation in High Rise Towers” at Ahmedabad. This was in honor of National Safety Week from 4th to 11th March 2005.

 In association with the fire brigade team demonstration of various hydraulic tools that are utilized during disaster such as e-quake, accidents, poisonous gas leakage etc is arranged. This apart the special three-in-one emergency medical trauma care unit; which has safety equipments, fire fighting equipments as well as well equipped ambulance is also demonstrated. A live demonstration on fire and how to utilize the installed safety system was also given. Around 2500 members of various towers took advantage of these programmes.

As part of VPF’s school programmes, VPF also organized an informative programme on Fire Safety and Disaster Mitigation for the school children at various schools in Ahmedabad, Anand, Nadiad, Valsad and Bhuj. Around 15000 students from class I to XI participated in this programme.

The students found it very informative. After this programme, the students found it very informative and became more confident after viewing the latest equipments. The feeling of safety occurred that in any type of disaster they are at least in safe hands of fire brigade.

While the Head Mistress Pragya Madam felt that a second round of lecture should be arranged for the students so that they can get more idea about the disaster and they do not panic or create havoc in such situation. They can also save their life as well as they can save some others life also.

Parth Trivedi of class 8th was very excited about the demonstration and said that after earthquake he always had mental stress. He always felt unsafe and unsecured. But after this informative demonstration he felt that he is in safe hand now and stress free. He felt happy to see that we have latest equipments, which in comparison to manual labour can short down the time, and this could be more effective to save many lives.
